Why do we tend to forget users when we develop scientific software? Can we learn from the experiences of startup companies, open source software projects, and how research is conducted today? This keynote for the Scientific Software Days in Austin on 16th December 2013 explores these questions and suggests four "golden rules" that can be applied.
